Quinceañera Customs, Symbols, Terms and Significance

In some Hispanic cultures, the gifts are given to the Quinceanera by "padrinos" (also called godparents or sponsors) specially chosen by the family. The padrinos who give the Traditional Gifts are formally recognized, and often are part of the procession for either the church or reception ceremony, or do the presentation of the gifts to the priest for the blessing.

Tiara - The Crown of Life that designates her as a queen or princess before God. a triumph over childhood and ability to face the challenges ahead.
Cross (necklace) -Signifies faith - in God, in herself, and in her world.  proclaims her Christianity
Ring or Bracelet - Representing the unending circle of life, it symbolizes the unending emergence of the young woman's abilities and future contributions to society.
Earrings - A reminder to hear god's word and always hear and respond to the world around her.
Prayer Book, Bible, and/or Rosary - A way to keep the word of God close.
Padrinos (sponsors) - This custom is a blend of Mexican-American tradition. It is designed to spread the economic burden of the party among the extended family and close family friends. Each sponsor donates cash or buys a specific element of the celebration, such as drinks, cake, napkins, flowers, etc. as a present to the quinceañera.
The Court of Honor - Although traditionally it has been fourteen girls and fourteen boys, it is more common today to have seven couples. The Court of Honor supports the quinceañera by standing with her during the ceremony. They consist of friends and family closest to her age and dearest to her heart.
The Honor Escort - Generally this is an older brother, cousin, or friend, or an uncle or even the father of the quinceañera. The Honor Escort accompanies the quinceañera throughout the ceremony and festivities.
Changing of the Shoes - The father changes the Quince's shoes from flats to heels, signifying the change from childhood to young womanhood.
Roses - During a Protestant ceremony, a presentation of red roses is made to the girl herself. In Catholic ceremonies, roses are presented to the altar of the Virgin Mary.
